Treasury Designation of Individuals Furthering Syrian Regime's Efforts to Undermine Lebanese Democracy

The Treasury Department designated four individuals associated with Syria's efforts to interfere with Lebanon's democratic political process. "Syria has used all means at its disposal - from bribery to intimidation to violence - to undermine the legitimate political process in Lebanon," said Stuart Levey, under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in a statement. "Today's action exposes four individuals involved in such activities and serves as a warning to others who would do likewise." The four individuals - Assaad Halim Hardan, Wi'am Wahhab, Hafiz Makhluf and Muhammad Nasif Khayrbik, senior Syrian officials who have worked closely with the regime in Damascus to undermine Beirut's sovereignty - now have their U.S. assets frozen and are prohibited from engaging in transactions in the United States.
