AIPAC Applauds Senate Call to Crack Down on Iran's Nuclear Efforts

Statement by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee

Washington, D.C.— AIPAC applauds Senate passage of a strong bi-partisan resolution (S.Con.Res.81)
calling on the IAEA to report to the Security Council Iran's non-compliance with the NPT, and urging the
Security Council to address the threat to international peace and security posed by Iran's nuclear program
by taking such actions as may be necessary.

This issue is especially vital given the IAEA's revelations regarding Iran's blatant pattern of deception and
obfuscation, and the overwhelming evidence of its pursuit of nuclear weapons and repeated violations of the
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism. As the 9/11 Commission has recently made public,
Iran's ties to Al Qaeda are substantial, and it remains the number one sponsor of Hezbollah, responsible for
killing 241 Americans in Beirut in 1984, and which is to this day, considered the "A-Team" of terrorism by
top U.S officials.

The resolution further calls on the Europeans to use their significant trade interest in Iran as a key lever to
pressure the Iranian Government to abandon its dangerous and potentially deadly nuclear ambitions.

This effort, lead by Sens. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and supported by Foreign Relations
Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN), and Ranking Member Joe Biden (D-DE), is particularly
important given the recent revelations detailing Iran's continuing deception uncovered by the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and reiterated in its June 1 report. The report points to further evidence that
Iran is concealing its nuclear program from international inspectors, and has repeatedly breached the NPT.
