Below is an update on today's events in Gaza.
Just 90 minutes into a 72-hour cease-fire agreement, Hamas terrorists emerged from a tunnel and attacked an Israeli military position, detonating a suicide bomber that killed two IDF soldiers. These terrorists then kidnapped another soldier, 23 year-old Hadar Goldin, and took him hostage.
This heinous violation of the U.N.- and U.S.-backed cease-fire was met with quick condemnation by the United States. President Obama said, “I have unequivocally condemned Hamas and Palestinian factions for killing two Israeli soldiers and kidnapping a third, minutes after the ceasefire was announced.” Secretary of State John Kerry called Hamas’ actions “outrageous.”
As this conflict escalates and rocket fire continues, we know that our work together is helping keep Israel strong.
Today, the Senate voted by unanimous consent to approve an additional $225 million for the Iron Dome Rocket Defense System. This remarkable Israeli project has saved countless lives and has stopped more than 520 rockets from crashing down on Israeli homes and communities.
AIPAC applauds the bipartisan leadership of the Obama Administration, Majority Leader Harry Reid, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, and Sens. Barbara Mikulski, Lindsey Graham, Dick Durbin, Charles Schumer and John McCain for ensuring that these essential funds were expedited at this critical moment.
This funding, which still has to be approved by the House, would not have happened without your involvement with AIPAC and the support of key leaders in Congress.
Please thank your senators for their leadership and support.
