Meanwhile, Tehran continues to expand its nuclear program in violation of its international obligations. The United States must dramatically increase the pressure on Iran to suspend its program by enforcing current sanctions, enacting new measures, and increasing a credible military threat.

American policy is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The United States and the international community have put in place a sanctions regime that is dramatically impacting Iran’s economy. Yet, the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program persists. America must persuade Tehran that it will thwart its nuclear weapons program. Washington can do so by ratcheting up sanctions enforcement, imposing new sanctions, displaying a credible military option and standing by our ally Israel.

To help Israel maintain a strong military, the United States provides the Jewish state with annual security assistance as part of the overall foreign aid bill. This vital aid, most of which Israel spends in the United States, is the most tangible expression of American support for the Jewish state.

On February 6, the United States announced a new round of sanctions designed to limit Tehran’s access to foreign exchange. But Washington needs to step up enforcement of these and earlier sanctions if it hopes to persuade Iran to abandon its illicit nuclear pursuit. Particularly as the international community prepares for talks with Iran in late February, the United States must let Tehran know that the mullahs will face unremitting pressure until the Islamic regime changes course.

On Tuesday, January 22, 66.6 percent of eligible voters took part in Israeli elections for the 19th Knesset—Israel’s parliament. Final results were announced on January 24. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party won the most votes, and holds 31 of the 120 seats in the Knesset. President Shimon Peres will ask a Knesset member, usually the leader of the largest party, to form a new coalition government. The United States has affirmed that it is eager to work with Israel’s new government.
