Since the beginning of August, a number of leaders in Iran and its regional proxies have made extremely troubling anti-Israel statements. While anti-Israel vitriol from pro-Iranian leaders is nothing new, the frequency and intensity of these statements has increased in the past few weeks.

Israel is America’s closest ally in the Middle East. To help Israel maintain a strong military, the United States provides the Jewish state with annual security assistance as part of the overall foreign aid bill. This vital aid, most of which Israel spends in the United States, is the most tangible expression of American support for the Jewish state.

More than 200 rockets and mortars were launched into Israel in the month of June, a sharp rise over previous months. Attacks against Israelis emanated not only from Hamas-controlled Gaza, but from the increasingly lawless Egyptian Sinai desert. The increase in violence comes in the wake of mounting regional instability and uncertainty, including the election of an Islamist president in Egypt. The United States should continue to work closely with Israel to help it expand its capabilities to defend against these growing threats.
