A tour bus carrying Israeli vacationers was attacked outside the airport in the Black Sea city of Burgas, Bulgaria on Wednesday, July 18, by a suicide bomber carrying fake American identification. Five Israelis were killed, along with the Bulgarian driver of the bus and the bomber, and dozens more were injured.

Yitzhak Shamir, who served as Israel's prime minister longer than anyone but David Ben-Gurion, died June 30 at the age of 96. A native of Poland who immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1935, Shamir was among the last of a generation of men and women who were the founding fathers and mothers of Israel.
