1. U.S. Police Officers Discuss Counterterrorism with Israeli Police
A group of counterterrorism experts from U.S. police departments travelled to the Jewish state this month for meetings with their Israeli counterparts, JTA reported. The officials, who came from Houston, New York City, Miami, Montgomery County, Md., Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, participated in a review of terror prevention and detection techniques with Israeli police in Tel Aviv as part of a trip sponsored by Project Interchange. The officials explored ways to enhance airport protection, combat terror finance and review high-tech devices.

2. U.S., Israel Combat Illegal Medication
The United States and Israel participated in a worldwide effort to stop Internet sales of outlawed or counterfeit pharmaceuticals, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported. The operation, entitled Operation Pangea III, took place from Oct. 5 to 12 and included the participation of international agencies such as INTERPOL as well as more than 40 nations.

3. Israeli, U.S. Swat Teams Take Top Spots in Training Competition
An Israeli police team and an Oakland police SWAT team took first and second place respectively at the world-renown Urban Shield Training Exercise this month, the Oakland Tribune reported. Approximately 30 groups from all over the world participated in the event, during which they displayed skills in different emergency preparedness scenarios. Some of the drills the groups enacted included responding to nuclear or weapons attack, freeing hostages and natural catastrophes.

4. Israel Builds New Hospital with Emergency Preparedness in Mind
Construction began on Israel’s Rambam hospital this month in what will be the world’s biggest secure underground hospital of its kind, Xinhua reported. In previous wars, this hospital, located in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, came under fire, and the new emergency center will be built in a way that will ensure its safety in case of possible attacks. This new facility has the potential to serve as a model of innovation for the United States and other countries in disaster response.

5. Israel Launches Nation-Wide Emergency Awareness Campaign
Israel’s Home Front Command, the equivalent to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, introduced an effort to increase civilian preparedness in case of emergency, The Jerusalem Post reported. The initiative aims to provide the population with the necessary information to ensure their safety in case of attack by unconventional weaponry. The strategy employees social media as well as printed materials to inform Israeli citizens of evacuation time to their nearest secure location as well as suggested supplies.
