1. Lawmaker Encourages U.S.-Israel Homeland Security Cooperation
House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) called on the U.S. government and Israel to increase cooperative efforts on developing anti-terrorism technology, including the creation of a funding pool to help spur innovation, Congress Daily reported. Thompson made the comments after meeting with Israeli Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter to discuss provisions of the Promoting Antiterrorism Cooperation through Technology and Science Act, which passed in July as part of the legislation implementing the recommendations of the 9-11 Commission. The provisions set up an office within the Department of Homeland Security to spur U.S. homeland security cooperation with U.S. allies such as Israel.

3. New Israeli Aviation Systems to Stymie Missiles and Hijackings
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has approved two initiatives aimed at preventing airplane hijackings and shoulder-fired missile attacks against planes, JTA reported. As of 2008, all airlines flying into Israel will be equipped with Code Positive, a system that allows ground controllers to determine if planes have been commandeered by terrorists. Additionally, MUSIC (Multi-Spectral Counter MANPADS System), a system designed to thwart heat-seeking missiles by using non-pyrotechnic lasers to sear the heat-seekers on incoming missiles and thus throw them off course, is scheduled to be ready for use in 2010.

4. TraceGuard Completes Pilot Program of CompactSafe System at Ben Gurion Airport
TraceGuard Technologies Inc., an explosives detection technologies developer, announced completion of the second pilot program for its CompactSafe system at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel. The program aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the automated screening system, to verify CompactSafe's performance and durability, and to acquaint airport personnel with the system. NBC news reported earlier this year that the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate announced its own testing of the system.

5. Port of Haifa Now Operates Under CSI
Israel's port of Haifa is the 55th port to join the Container Security Initiative, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) agency announced. Under the initiative, containers identified as high-risk by CPB are inspected before deploying to the U.S. Non-intrusive inspection and radiation detection technologies are used to screen the containers before they are shipped to U.S. ports.
