U.N. Condemns Syrian Fighting Near Golan

The United Nations on Nov. 6 condemned Syrian forces for engaging in fighting against the uprising near the Golan Heights ceasefire line with Israel, Agence France Presse reported.

Israel called on the U.N. to take action after one of its patrols in the territory was struck by bullets.

“The presence of military personnel and the military operations in the area of separation are grave violations of the 1974 agreement” that set up the demilitarized zone, said U.N. spokesperson Martin Nesirky.

“It has the potential to escalate tensions between Israel and Syria,” he added, “and jeopardizes the ceasefire between the two countries and the stability of the region.”
