West Wants Signal on Deal at Iran Talks

World powers want to move towards the first in a series of confidence-building deals with Iran over its nuclear activities next week, hoping Tehran halts the production of highly enriched uranium in return for a package of concessions by the international community, The Financial Times reported Thursday, May 17. As Iran prepares to meet the E.U. and six world powers at talks in Baghdad next week, diplomats say they do not know whether the Iranian delegation will arrive at the talks wanting to strike a deal. However, they reasserted on Thursday that there was limited time for a confidence-building deal to be struck. Diplomats are also making clear there can be no halting or peeling back of E.U. and U.S. sanctions unless Iran first makes significant concessions over its nuclear program, probably including the dismantling of existing enrichment sites.
