Syria continues to play a destabilizing role across the Middle East. Damascus maintains close ties with Tehran, intimidates pro-Western factions in Lebanon and refuses to negotiate directly with Israel. The Syrian capital is also the home of Hamas' headquarters. At the same time, Syria's president says he wants peace with Israel and better ties with the United States. A panel of experts discusses the potential for détente between Syria and the West.
