The Treasury Department designated four individuals associated with Syria’s efforts to interfere with Lebanon’s democratic political process. “Syria has used all means at its disposal – from bribery to intimidation to violence – to undermine the legitimate political process in Lebanon,” said Stuart Levey, under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in a statement. “Today's action exposes four individuals involved in such activities and serves as a warning to others who would do likewise.” The four individuals – Assaad Halim Hardan, Wi'am Wahhab, Hafiz Makhluf and Muhammad Nasif Khayrbik, senior Syrian officials who have worked closely with the regime in Damascus to undermine Beirut’s sovereignty – now have their U.S. assets frozen and are prohibited from engaging in transactions in the United States.
