Kyl-Lieberman Iran Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008

9/26/2007

Summary:

As part of the fiscal year 2008 defense authorization bill, the Senate passed a measure by a vote of 76-22 that urges the Bush administration to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The IRGC -- an elite military branch of Iran's government consisting of some 125,000 members -- arms, funds and trains terrorist networks from Gaza to Afghanistan. The designation would allow the United States to freeze the assets of the IRGC and of those who conduct business with it. The measure was introduced by Sens. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Joseph Lieberman (I-CT).
