The law implements an agreement adopting the Magen David Adom Society and its Red Crystal symbol into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It extends U.S. legal protection to the “red crystal” symbol, which includes a Star of David, under which Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency medical service joined the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The movement formally admitted MDA to its ranks in June 2006, ending a decades-long period during which Arab and Muslim countries blocked the Israeli group from joining. The American Red Cross helped break the shutout, withholding dues to the international body until it admitted MDA.
