The Defense Department outlines the threat of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons proliferation from five Middle Eastern countries -- Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Sudan -- and singles out Iran for its strategy to increase its influence in the region by developing non-conventional weapons.  Weapons proliferation in the Middle East, the document notes, threatens U.S. interests in the region, which include maintaining a steadfast commitment to Israel’s security and well-being, combating terrorism and promoting respect for human rights and the rule of law.
