Senate Letter Opposing U.S.-Russia Nuclear Cooperation Agreement
5/7/2008
Summary:
Thirty two senators signed a letter to President Bush expressing concern that the impending nuclear cooperation agreement with Russia would undermine U.S. policy towards Iran. The letter, authored by Sens. Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) and sent on May 7, urges the president “not to send the agreement with Russia to Congress until Russia has ended support for Iran’s ballistic missile program and stopped providing advanced conventional weapons and assistance to Iran’s nuclear fuel cycle program.” The agreement was signed by the United States and Russia on May 6. Once sent to the Hill, Congress would have a 90 day window of opportunity to disapprove of the agreement.
