Since declaring independence in 1948, Israel has repeatedly been forced to defend itself from its enemies. Surrounded by hostile nations as well as Iranian-backed terrorist groups on its northern and southern borders, Israel is constantly under the threat of attack. Israel's struggle to survive also includes international challenges to its legitimacy. In the United Nations, Israel is singled out for condemnation in the General Assembly, one-sided resolutions in the Security Council or by the biased Human Rights Council reports. While Israel's right to self-defense is questioned by its adversaries, it has every right to defend its borders, protect its citizens and be treated fairly in the United Nations.
