Syrian President Bashar Assad

Syria must take serious steps toward peace.

For decades, Syria has been a force for instability in the region. Damascus's continued support for terrorism, its cooperation with Iran and ongoing interference in Lebanon have run counter to American interests. As Syria works to end its international isolation and explores direct negotiations with Israel, Damascus must take concrete steps to demonstrate its seriousness toward ending the conflict with Israel and acting as a source of stability in the region.

Israel's Right to Self-Defense

President Obama"We strongly believe that, given its size, its history, the region that it's in, and the threats that are leveled against us -- against it, that Israel has unique security requirements. It's got to be able to respond to threats or any combination of threats in the region."

—President Obama - July 6, 2010
