As the leading state sponsor of international terrorism, a nuclear-armed Iran would pose unacceptable threats to the United States and its allies. Although Iran is rapidly progressing toward a nuclear breakout capability, internationally imposed sanctions are seriously hampering Iran's ability to conduct business abroad and to attract desperately needed investment for its energy sector. Increased economic, diplomatic and political sanctions are needed to persuade a defiant Iran to turn away from its dangerous pursuit of nuclear weapons.
